Formatting a BitLocker-encrypted partition does not necessarily overwrite every encrypted sector. In favorable cases, parts of the original encrypted volume and its metadata may remain present.
What formatting changes
The effect depends on whether the format was quick or full, whether new partitions were created, the type of storage device, and how much new data was written afterward.
Why authentication material matters
BitLocker recovery is not the same as bypassing encryption. Recovery usually depends on valid credentials or recovery information, together with enough surviving volume structures to reconstruct and authenticate the encrypted data.
SSD and NVMe considerations
On solid-state storage, TRIM and garbage collection may reduce the recovery window. Powering the system repeatedly or installing Windows can trigger additional writes and internal cleanup.

- Stop using the drive.
- Preserve the recovery key and password.
- Do not initialize or repartition it.
- Keep the original computer or TPM available when possible.
- Arrange a read-only technical assessment.
