Do not initialize the NAS

Initialization can create new partitions, arrays and file systems over recoverable metadata.

Do not change disk order

Label every drive by bay number before removal and keep all failed, replacement and spare disks.

Do not run file-system repair

Do not update firmware repeatedly

Should I replace a failed NAS disk and start a rebuild?

Not when the data is critical or another disk may be weak. Rebuilds place sustained load on every surviving member and can overwrite useful data when the wrong disk, order or configuration is used.

Can you recover a Synology NAS with a crashed storage pool?

Yes, in many cases. We analyse SHR or RAID metadata, Linux partitions, LVM structures, Btrfs or EXT4 file systems and the condition of every member disk before reconstructing the storage pool virtually.

Can QNAP shared folders and iSCSI LUNs be recovered?

Often yes. Recovery can include RAID groups, storage pools, static or thick volumes, shared folders, iSCSI LUNs and virtual-machine data, depending on overwrite and media condition.

Do you need the NAS enclosure?

Send the enclosure, power supply and every original disk whenever possible. The disks contain the primary data, while the appliance can provide model, configuration and firmware context.

Can data be recovered after a factory reset or reinitialization?

Potentially. Success depends on what the reset changed and whether new storage pools, volumes or data were written afterward. Stop using the NAS immediately to reduce overwrite.

Should I remove disks from their bays?

Only after clearly labelling each disk by bay number. Never mix the order. Include failed, replaced and spare disks because each may contain important metadata or data stripes.
